Basic Acrylic Color Mixing Guide for Beginners (With Examples)

Color mixing is one of the most important skills in acrylic painting. Many beginners buy many paint tubes, but in reality, you can create most colors using only a few basic ones.

In this guide, I’ll explain simple color mixing techniques that every beginner should know.

🎨 The Primary Colors

Primary colors are:

  • Red

  • Blue

  • Yellow

You cannot create these colors by mixing others.
But you can create almost every other color using them.

🟠 Mixing Secondary Colors

Secondary colors are created by mixing two primary colors.

Red + Yellow = Orange
Blue + Yellow = Green
Red + Blue = Purple

Use equal amounts first.
Then adjust if you want lighter or darker shades.

🟤 How to Make Brown

Brown is very common in landscapes and portraits.

Easy method:

Red + Green
OR
Blue + Orange

Adjust the ratio until you get the shade you want.

🌸 How to Make Lighter Shades

To make colors lighter:

Add small amounts of white.

Important:
Add white slowly. Too much white makes the color look dull.

🌑 How to Make Darker Shades

To darken a color:

Add a small amount of black.

But be careful — black is very strong.

Alternative method:
Add the complementary color instead of black for more natural shadows.

🎯 Tips for Smooth Color Mixing

  • Mix colors on a clean palette.

  • Start with small amounts.

  • Clean brush between colors.

  • Test on scrap paper before applying to canvas.

Final Thoughts

Understanding color mixing reduces the need to buy many paint tubes. With just a few primary colors and white/black, you can create a wide range of shades.

Practice mixing regularly. Over time, you’ll develop better control and instinct for color balance.
